A beautiful sunburst shines through the branches of this old tree in the gardens of Mepkin Abbey, a Trappist monastery near Moncks Corner, South Carolina.In 1949, twenty-nine monks of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (Trappists) came from Gethsemani, Kentucky, to found Mepkin Abbey. Today, the Abbey and Mepkin Gardens are open to the public on a daily basis with few exceptions.
