Description
Latourell Falls, the closest of the major Columbia River Gorge waterfalls to Portland, is one of the most photogenic. A tall single-plunge waterfall of 224 feet spills over the lip of an undercut amphitheater of tall pillars of columnar basalt. An eye-catching splash of chartreuse-colored golden cobblestone lichen adorns the upper amphitheater and contrasts with the dark basalt walls. The lower falls is visible from a point just above the trailhead, but the loop hike trail travels to Latourell Creek where the two-tiered Upper Latourell Falls is visible. The trail then winds up under the highway bridge to the base of Latourell Falls where the plunge and basalt columns can be admired from below. The Columbia River Gorge is a canyon of the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Up to 4,000 feet deep, the canyon stretches for over eighty miles as the river winds westward through the Cascade Range, forming the boundary between the state of Washington to the north and Oregon to the south.
