Description
The animals at Middleton Place Plantation in Charleston, South Carolina are known to have been on the plantation just prior to the Civil War thanks to surviving records from the 1850 and 1860 censuses, and from various letters, inventories, and receipts found in the Middleton Place archives. Middleton Place is home to the oldest landscaped gardens in the United States. It was built during the 18th and 19th centuries and was the primary residence of several generations of the Middleton family, many of whom played prominent roles in the colonial and antebellum history of South Carolina. The plantation is now designated as a National Historic Landmark District.
