Artist's Description
A great blue heron, having a bad hair day, balances on a tree branch in the rookery at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens in Charleston, South Carolina. Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is located along the Ashley River and are the oldest gardens in America, originally opening to visitors in 1870 and are the last large scale Romantic Gardens left in the United States. They have survived for centuries and have witnessed many historical events including the American Revolution and the Civil War. In 2014, Travel + Leisure Magazine selected them as one of American's Most Beautiful Gardens, and they are the only gardens to hold that distinction in the state of South Carolina.
