An American alligator suns himself at the edge of the 80 acre blackwater bald cypress/tupelo swamp at Cypress Gardens, a 170-acre preserve located in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. The American alligator is a large crocodilian reptile native to the Southeastern United States. Adult males measure approximately 11 to 15 feet in length and can weigh up to 999 pounds. It inhabits warm temperate and tropical freshwater wetlands, such as marshes and cypress swamps, from southern Texas to North Carolina.
